Caring for your rings: an essential step to preserve their beauty over the long term

A frequently worn piece of jewelry necessarily shows signs of time. You expose it to scratches and accidental shocks as it participates in various moments of life alongside you.

However, a ring, bracelet or necklace will tend to age better if you follow a few basic rules. While cleaning techniques vary depending on the materials your jewelry is made of, some maintenance tips apply universally to all jewels.

Therefore, we recommend that you keep your rings in a dedicated box when you are not wearing them. For optimal storage, it is best to choose a compartmentalized box or individual pouches, which will allow you to separate your different pieces of jewelry to limit the risk of scratches caused by mixing several gems or materials.

By keeping your rings away from light, heat, air and humidity, you offer them maximum protection against all conditions that can alter their shine over time. Also remember to remove them before starting any task or activity that could threaten their integrity: taking a shower, cleaning, going to the beach, putting on perfume, playing sports, putting on makeup, gardening, etc. Also remove your rings before going to sleep to avoid any damaging bad position.

Maintenance guide by material

Not all rings need the same care. Here are the different methods to favor to maintain yours in the best conditions.

Please note: rings are delicate pieces that require the utmost care. Older models are generally thinner and therefore more fragile, which is why we invite you to handle them with care each time you clean them.

Gold rings

On a daily basis, it is advisable to clean your yellow, white or pink gold rings at the end of the day to remove accumulated fingerprints, grease or perspiration. To do this, use a soft, clean and dry cloth such as a chamois and gently rub your jewels before placing them back in your jewelry box.

About once a week, depending on how often you wear them, give your gold rings a thorough cleaning. You can use half a cup of warm water with a few drops of liquid soap to soak each ring for 3 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water, then dry thoroughly with a suitable cloth.

Do you have a white gold ring or wedding band that is turning yellow? Be aware that all white gold jewelry is covered with a layer of rhodium, a very hard metal, which guarantees its shiny and immaculate appearance. However, wear damages this protective coating and leaves room for the natural color of the gold over time, which is why it is recommended to renew the rhodium plating of your white gold jewelry every 2 to 3 years with a jeweler.

However, a few simple steps can help you slow down the wear and tear of your white gold pieces at home. Soak them in soapy water at 40°C for about fifteen minutes, then scrub them with a soft-bristled brush such as a toothbrush. Rinse your jewellery in cold water and dry them carefully until they are completely dry. If your white gold wedding ring is set with precious stones, just wait until the water has cooled before rinsing it to limit any temperature shock.

Silver rings

Like gold rings, silver models should also be cleaned daily when you wear them. Again, use a chamois cloth to polish your jewelry down to the smallest corners.

Want to make your silver rings shine? Then try baking soda to clean them properly. To do this, pour cold water into a bowl and add a teaspoon of the product. Then immerse your jewelry in the mixture for a few hours, then rub them gently with a soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Rinse them with clean water and dry them before wearing or storing them.

Instead of reviving the shine of silver rings , chemicals actually dull their shine. If you don't have baking soda available, replace it with coarse salt or lemon to maintain your silver jewelry.

Diamond rings

Although diamond is one of the hardest materials in the world, it still requires gentle cleaning on a daily basis.

So take care of your diamond rings by letting them sit in warm water with a little mild soap or ammonia for about 20 minutes. Brush each gem with a soft-bristled brush, rinse with warm water and dry with a suitable cloth. You can soak and brush your jewels several times in a row, depending on the level of shine desired.

Be careful with baking soda, which can cause unsightly scratches on diamond rings as it is an abrasive product.

For your rings made of (semi-)precious stones, everything finally depends on the type of mineral concerned. While gemstones (sapphire, ruby and emerald) can be cleaned in the same way as diamonds, fine stones and other stones can be maintained like the metal with which they are associated on each of your jewels. Thus, a gold and amethyst ring can be cleaned like a classic gold ring, unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer.
